New Zealand - Climbing Mt Karioi
New Zealand - Climbing Mt Karori
Time from Auckland CBD: 2 hours non stop
Cost: Free
After visiting Raglan for the evening, and eating too much home cooked food, we stayed the night to climb Mt Karori, to justify our over eating. This climb starts off with a bang, and you are straight into walking up hill. Most of the climb is done in the first 1.5 hours, and then you follow the ridge line for 0.5 hours. Adding to the fun, there are ladders and chain assited climbs to tackle along the way!
What to take:
Snacks
Strong shoes
Raincoat
Water
There are two start points to climb Mt Karioi from:
Karioi Track
Time to walk: 3 hours
Start point: Te Toto Gorge car park, Whaanga road
Wairake Track
Length of track: 2 hours
Start point: End of Karioi road
The Wairake Track is shorter and easier, but the Karioi Track is more fun!
An alternative is to take two cars, park one car at each car park and walk up and over, between the two cars. This should take 3 - 4 hours.
