Japan - How to get between Tokyo's airports

My mum and I were flying from Auckland to London, and as per usual mum had booked the cheapest flight possible:

Auckland to Haneda.

Narita to Paris.

Paris to London.

Three flights. Five airports. Seven hours to get across Tokyo, check in and catch our flight in rush hour. Mission accepted.

Mum booked this, "it was a good idea at the time" flight through a third party booking service. If you are booking a flight through a third party flight booking site, for example Expedia.com, always, always, ALWAYS check that your transfer flight arrives and departs from the SAME airport. No biggy if it does not, as long as you are aware that you will need to:

  1. go through customs

  2. enter the country (think potential visa issues)

  3. get from airport to the other with your baggage

  4. check in two hours before your next flight

Haneda International Airport to Narita International Airport

Tokyo's Haneda and Narita International Airports are roughly 80km apart, so how do we get inbetween them? We have a few different options:

Train

Train lines: Keikyu, Asakusa and Keisei

Price: ¥1.746*

Time: 92 minutes

Change: Keiseitakasago station

Price: ¥1440*

Time: 145 minutes

Price: ¥3,020*

Time: 90 minutes

Also know as Access Express or Airport Kaitoku, this is a direct service between the two airports.

Price: ¥1200*

Bus

Price: ¥3100 adults, ¥1550 child*

Time: 65 - 85 minutes

Taxi

This is basically gonna cost you an organ, but the option is available. A couple of different sites say up to ¥30,000*.

Greg from Tokyo Cheapo has writen a good article about getting between Narita Airport and Toyko.

Just in case you were wondering, we made our flight, despite catching the wrong train, switching trains at Tokyo Train Station without a ticket, and having dramas finding an ATM because apparently Japan only deals in cash, and ATMs are scarce. Mission complete.

Good luck out there!

Sarah
